EPM is not just lost strength and muscle. This is why current recommendations don’t work!
The neurological damage results in lost PROPRIOCEPTION. The BRAIN cannot sense where the body or parts are in space, or coordinate their movement. Proprioception is often considered the 6th sense after SIGHT, HEARING, SMELL, TASTE, and TOUCH. A horse can’t move differently when it cannot sense or connect to that foot, limb, or muscle.
If your horse is stumbling and unsteady, making them go over cavalettis is ineffective and risky.
If your horse has lost muscle and is dragging his hind feet, hill work is dangerous.
Backing up a horse who has “lost” her hind end is like asking her to back off a cliff.
Step 1. Stabilize and support the horse physically and protect it from injury.
Step 2. Create PROPRIOCEPTION so that the brain and body are connected.
Step 3. Begin non-challenging exercises based on willingness and ability.
Step 4. Continue to build strength and connection slowly; to regain, strengthen, build, surpass, and thrive.
ProSix provides the missing proprioceptive information to the central nervous system in a way you can’t. This starts immediately with the first time the horse wears ProSix and becomes stronger with continued use. ProSix provides the external connection needed to stimulate the brain. Neuroplasticity or the brain’s ability to create new connections will begin to replace the lost internal connections.
Rehabilitation is renewal, to keep the equine sensory, neurological, and musculoskeletal systems strong and functioning optimally throughout your horse’s lifetime.
